Event #3: $25,000 Short Deck Hold’em
Day 2 Completed
He may be in the middle of a fast, but Tony G proved that he's as hungry for poker glory as he's ever been, with victory at the Super High Roller Bowl Europe at the Merit Royal Hotel & Casino, Cyprus.
Tony G defeated a field of 45 players to win Event #3: $25,000 Short Deck for $382,500. Runner-up Chris Brewer would have to settle for $247,500, but the American did move up to sixth in the PokerGO Tour leaderboard following this result.
This was Tony G's first live tournament win since a Triton Short Deck victory at partypoker MILLIONS Europe over two years ago.
Place | Player | Country | Payout (USD) |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Tony G | Lithuania | $382,500 |
2 | Chris Brewer | United States | $247,500 |
3 | Robert Flink | Sweden | $168,750 |
4 | Santi Jiang | Spain | $123,750 |
5 | Paul Phua | Malaysia | $90,000 |
6 | Danny Tang | Hong Kong | $67,500 |
The start-of-day chip leader was Danny Tang, but it was a final table to forget for Tang who lost pre-flop all ins to Paul Phua and Tony G, before being sent to the rail by Chris Brewer in sixth.
The departure of Tang moved Brewer into the chip lead, before Tony G sent Phua to the rail, but Brewer extended his chip lead with the elimination of Santi Jiang in fourth. Jiang was making his second final table appearance at the SHRB Europe, after finishing sixth in Event #1.
Robert Flink had impressed with several well-timed bluffs, but a straight forward hand saw him double through Brewer into the chip lead. However, one of these bluffs would be his downful as he relinquished the chip lead to Tony G.
The pace would slow three-handed, allowing Brewer to reassert himself, moving into the chip lead once more. The swings continued, however, with Tony G scoring a huge double through Brewer after flopping quads.
Flink was now the short-stack, and although he did double through Tony G he was subsequently sent to the rail by Brewer.
The tumultuous nature of this final table continued, with the chip lead trading hands between Tony G and Brewer. The pivotal moment came when Brewer flopped a straight, only for Tony G to make a backdoor full house. Brewer paid off his opponent's river bet, and Tony G never looked back.
He closed it out at the first time of asking to secure victory.
"I am the best!" said Tony G after victory. "At least I had the most fun. The fasting worked. Now let me go back to back and win two in a row.
"King-jack is one of the best hands in short deck," he told PokerNews. "It's perfect to win tournaments. You should never play it in Texas Hold'em, but in short deck you should play it."
