Poker is a popular card game that combines elements of chance and strategy. There are various styles of poker, all of which share an objective of presenting the least probable or highest-scoring hand.

What is Poker?

Poker is a family of card games in which players wager over which hand is best according to that specific game's rules in ways similar to these rankings. Poker games vary in the number of cards dealt, the number of shared or "community" cards, the number of cards that remain hidden, and the betting procedures.

The most popular poker variants include Texas Hold'em, Omaha, Seven-Card Stud, and Five-Card Draw. In Hold'em poker, two hole cards are dealt to each player, followed by five community cards and four total betting rounds. Games like Omaha follow a similar format, but involve four hole cards for each player. Other games like Stud follow the same poker concepts, as in hand rankings are the same as in Hold'em and Omaha, but play with a different dynamic. In Stud, for instance, a player is dealt two downcards and one upcard. A round of betting then unfolds. Three more cards a dealt one-by-one face up, with a round of betting commencing after each card. A final seventh card is then dealt face down before a final round of betting.

Other games follow completely different rules, such as Badugi and Hi-lo games. Badugi involves getting the lowest possible four-card hand numerically, where each card is a different suit. In Hi-lo games, players compete for two pots. The high pot follows the same rules as traditional Hold'em poker. The lo pot requires the lowest numerical five-card hand, with an Ace counting as the lowest card.

Example of Poker Games

For instance, in Texas Hold'em, each player is dealt two private cards, and five community cards are dealt face-up on the "board". The player who makes the best five-card hand using any combination of their private cards and the community cards wins the pot.

In another variant, Omaha, each player is dealt four private cards, and five community cards are dealt face-up on the "board". The player must make the best five-card hand using exactly two of their private cards and three of the community cards.
