Hand #114 - Ivan Demidov

Chip leader Ivan Demidov

Ylon Schwartz has the button in Seat 3. Action folds to Scott Montgomery in the small blinds, who raises to 1.5 million. The big blind, Ivan Demidov, reraises to 4.025 million.

"How much do you have behind?" Montgomery asks. By our count, the answer is roughly 20 million.

After one minute in the tank, Montgomery raises all in. Demidov snap-calls for 24.375 million, drawing a grimace from Montgomery.

Montgomery: {A-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds}
Demidov: {K-Spades} {K-Diamonds}

Well, we've already seen A-x crack a big pocket pair once today, courtesy of Dennis Phillips. Montgomery will be looking for some of that magic himself. If he doesn't find a winner by the time the river hits the board, he'll be left with only 7 million chips.

There's a murmur of excitement and anticipation as two diamonds hit the flop, {6-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds} {6-Clubs}, to give Montgomery more outs. Any ace or any diamond will send Demidov to the rail absent improvement on his pair of kings. He has to sweat two more cards.

He ducks the turn successfully after it falls the {10-Spades}. There's one more card to sweat -- the river, which falls a harmless {3-Clubs}. One of Demidov's supporters, a gentleman with a Soviet flag draped around his neck, came barreling out of the stands to wrap Demidov in a bear hug.

This was a game-changing hand for both players. Montgomery has just 7.075 million chips; Demidov now is the clear chip leader, with 50.1 million.
