Hawkins Ascends to Overall Chiplead at Conclusion of Day 2d in the WSOP Main Event World Championship

Level 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante

Heading into Day 2d of Event #76: $10,000 WSOP Main Event World Championship at the 2023 World Series of Poker at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, the record for the largest WSOP Main Event field in its 54-year history had already been broken. However, the final number was not yet set, with late registration open until the start of Level 8 today.

Once late registration closed, the final tally stood at an astounding 10,043 entries, generating a total prize pool of $93,399,900 and blowing the previous record of 8,773 entrants, set in 2006, out of the water.

In the 2006 edition of this event, Jamie Gold famously talked his way to victory and a $12,000,000 payday. The eventual winner this year will receive exactly $100,000 more, a symbolic gesture ensuring that the champion of the largest Main Event ever will also be its biggest winner.

Coming into Day 2d, Nicholas "Dirty Diaper" Rigby had the chiplead. Today, he enjoyed another successful outing on the felt, slipping just one spot and bagging 921,500 for the second biggest stack going into Day 3. Of particular note, Rigby coolered Phil Hellmuth early on at the feature table, sending the 17-time bracelet winner to the rail.

While Rigby did add considerably to his already big stack, he did not end up with the most chips. That honor goes to all-time WSOP Circuit Ring leader Maurice Hawkins, who managed to amass a mammoth 941,000 in pursuit of his first WSOP gold bracelet. Other big stacks include Jeffrey Shapiro (832,000), Liran Betito (604,000), and a player so good that when heads-up his opponents simply walk away from the table, Jacob Mitich (660,000).

Main Event Day 2d Action

Many notables took their seat at the start of the day and were able to wend their way successfully through five 120-minute levels of play. Among them is mixed-game specialist and talented tennis player James Obst (593,000). After making a final table appearance at the 2023 Poker Player's Championship just a couple of weeks ago, he will be looking to add to his impressive summer showing. Chance Kornuth is currently on something of a heater, having won over $3.4 million in the last few months. That heater is showing no signs of cooling as he was able to bag an above average 449,500.

One of the more unexpected late entrants was none other than cash game legend Tom Dwan. Even though he only took his seat towards the end of registration, Dwan managed to equip himself with 426,500 as he looks to beef up a somewhat underwhelming tournament resum for a player of his stature.

Day 3 resumes on July 9th at 12 p.m. local time at which point the entire field will be playing together for the first time. Five more 120-minute levels will be played. Although with 1,507 players getting paid it is unlikely that the money bubble will burst during those five levels, there will still be plenty of action going down.

Be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews as its live reporting team continues to provide comprehensive coverage of Event #76: $10,000 WSOP Main Event World Championship.

Kassouf Plays One "Like a Boss"

Level 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
William Kassouf
William Kassouf

In a three-way pot with 14,000 in the middle on a flop showing 9?6?3?, a player in the big blind checked to the hijack who tossed out a bet of 4,000. Will Kassouf was next to act and made the call. The big blind got out of the way.

On the 7? turn, the hijack checked to Kassouf who fired for 13,000.

"I'll bet this much, just seeing where I'm at. If you got it, you got it," said Kassouf as his opponent was in the tank.

After close to 20 seconds, the hijack let his cards go and the pot was sent to Kassouf.

"Ace high like a boss!" shouted Kassouf as he tabled A?J?.

Kassouf has definitely become both a fan favorite and a villain at his table with lots of back-and-forth banter.

"Haters gonna hate," laughed Kassouf as he continued his table talk.

Soverel Sees Three Folds

Level 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Sam Soverel
Sam Soverel

Recelent bracelet winner Sam Soverel is one of the latest players to join the Red section in the final stretch of the day. After a raise from early position, the cutoff called and so did Soverel on the button. The big blind followed suit as well and a flop of 4?3?6? was seen four-way.

The big blind checked before early position bet out 5,000. The cutoff called but Soverel raised it up to 17,000. The big blind then folded and, after a quick pause, the two players who had put money in the pot followed as well, letting out little sighs in the process.

Cynn Not Slowing Down

Level 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
John Cynn
John Cynn

A player in the hijack opened to 6,000 and John Cynn called on the button.

The flop came 9?3?6? and the hijack fired a continuation bet for 7,000. Cynn made the call.

The hijack slowed down with a check on the 8? turn. Cynn bet 8,500 and his opponent quickly folded.

The very next hand at the same table, a player in middle position opened to 4,500 and received calls from John Cynn in the cutoff as well as both the blinds.

Action checked around to Cynn, who opted to bet 7,500 on the 10?4?2? flop. The blinds got out of the way and the original raiser made the call.

The original raiser checked on the 9? turn and Cynn fired a second barrel for 14,000, forcing a fold from his opponent to take down another decent pot.

Nicholas Rigby
Nicholas Rigby

Three ways to the 10?6?3? flop, Stephen Chimelski from middle position raised to 19,000 and Nicholas Rigby then jammed on the button. Davis Modans called all-in for 50,000 from under the gun and Chimelski followed suit for the 116,000 he had at his disposal to create a three-way all-in on the main feature table.

Davis Modans: J?J?
Stephen Chimelski: A?A?
Nicholas Rigby: 10?8?

The 2? turn was a blank but the 5? river improved Rigby to a flush, knocking out two opponents.

Round Seven Goes to Mercier

Level 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

Jason Mercier raised 4,000 in the cutoff and Dean Sanderson called in the small blind.

"Round seven," joked Mercier as the dealer fanned a flop of Q?8?3?.

Sanderson check-called a bet of 5,000 and the 4? hit the turn.

Sanderson checked once more before Mercier fired a bet of 16,000, and that was enough for Sanderson to give it up.

Hawkins Scores a Double Knockout

Level 9 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Maurice Hawkins
Maurice Hawkins

Maurice Hawkins had been stacking up further chips and the TV crew as well as players at the table and the rail confirmed a double-elimination.

The table was supposed to head to the feature stage but Brandon Mincher as well as David Martin won't get there.

On a three-way flop of J?10?9?, Martin bet and Hawkins raised to 30,000. Mincher then jammed and Martin called all-in, Hawkins called both of them.

David Martin: 10?10?
Brandon Mincher: K?Q?
Maurice Hawkins: A?7?

The A? turn and 8? river changed nothing as Hawkins chipped up even further.

Carey's Fairy Tale Continues

Level 9 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Irene Carey
Irene Carey

Irene Carey had turned her 188,000 to start the day into a stack of nearly 300,000 when she got involved in a hand against Gerald Siemienas.

With 15,000 chips already in the pot on a flop 4?K?8?, she led out for 4,500 from under the gun and Sieminis made the call. Carey then slowed down on the Q? turn and check-called an 8,000 bet from Siemienas instead.

On the 7? river, Carey retook the initiative and bet a whopping 27,500. This was enough to let Siemienas fold and Carey raked in another pot as her Day 2 keeps going swimmingly.

Mizrachi Flops the World

Level 9 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Robert Mizrachi
Robert Mizrachi

Action was picked up on the turn with the board reading 9?7?6?2? and a sizable pot already brewing. A player in early position bet 12,000 and Robert Mizrachi made the call from the hijack. A player on the button raised to 42,000 and the early position player called for less, putting himself all in and at risk.

Action was back on Mizrachi, who moved all in for 109,500 sending the player on the button, who slightly covered Mizrachi, deep into the tank. After about a minute the button made the call to put both of his opponents at risk.

Early Position: A?5?
Robert Mizrachi: 10?8?
Button: 6?6?

In what can only be described as a cooler, the button had flopped a set, the early position player had flopped the nut-flush draw and Mizrachi had flopped a straight with a redraw to a straight flush. The river was the 8?, and Mizrachi's ten-high straight was enough to secure a colossal triple up, eliminating one opponent and catapulting Mizrachi near the top of the counts in the process.
