El Matador Storms Back

After getting crippled on Hand #52, Carlos Mortensen hunkered down and focused on staying alive. He picked up several pots with timely steals and waited for an opportunity to double up. With Paul Lee playing passively and Guy Laliberte busting out, Mortensen got what he wanted... a chance to double through the biggest stack at the table. He pulled even with Paul Lee.

Hand #77: Carlos Mortensen Doubles Through Kirk Morrison

Carlos Mortensen
Carlos Mortensen
Hand #77 - Paul Lee has the button in seat 5, Morrison limps from the small blind for 300,000, and Mortensen checks his option. The flop comes {Q-Spades}{7-Hearts}{2-Clubs}, and both players check. The turn card is the {10-Hearts}, Morrison bets 400,000, Mortensen raises to 1.3 million, Morrison moves all in, and Mortensen calls all in for 3.2 million.

Morrison shows {10-Clubs}{6-Hearts} for a pair of tens, but Mortensen has {Q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a pair of queens. Morrison needs a ten or a six on the river to bust Morrison.

The river card is the {9-Diamonds}, and Carlos Mortensen doubles up in chips.

Hands #75-76

Hand #75 - Kirk Morrison has the button in seat 1, and it's folded to Lee in the big blind, giving him the blinds and antes.

Hand #76 - Carlos Mortensen has the button in seat 3, and he moves all in, winning the blinds and antes.

Lots of Outs

Guy Laliberte had plenty of outs on the flop when he moved all in. When the board paired on the turn, he picked up even more outs. At that point he looked like he was about to get there on the river with 22 outs in all. Morrison's pocket 2's miraculously held up when the river blanked up.

Hand #73: Guy Laliberte Eliminated in 4th Place ($696,220)

Guy Laliberte - 4th Place
Guy Laliberte - 4th Place
Hand #73 - Carlos Mortensen has the button in seat 3, Laliberte raises under the gun to 1.3 million, and Morrison calls from the big blind. The flop comes {Q-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}, Morrison checks, Laliberte bets 2 million, and Morrison thinks for about a minute before moving all in.

Laliberte calls, showing {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} for a jack-high flush draw. Morrison shows {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}, and actually has the lead. Laliberte needs an ace, a jack, or any club to stay alive.

The turn card is the {3-Spades}, pairing the board and making things more interesting. Laliberte needs an ace, a queen, a jack, a six, or any club to stay alive.

The river card is the {8-Spades}, and Morrison's pocket deuces hold up to win.

Guy Laliberte is eliminated in fourth place, earning $696,220. The next player eliminated will earn $1,082,920 for third place.

Paul Lee Picks Up Some Momentum

Paul Lee
Paul Lee
Paul Lee had been silent the last several hands before moving all-in on Hand #72. He's been sitting on the sidelines ever since he lost the chiplead, while everyone else has been involved in pots. He's been patient to pick his spots.

Hands #71-72

Hand #71 - Kirk Morrison has the button in seat 1, and everyone folds to Mortensen in the big blind, giving him the blinds and antes.

Hand #72 - Guy Laliberte has the button in seat 2, Mortensen limps from the small blind for 300,000, and Lee immediately moves all in from the big blind for more than 6 million. Mortensen folds, and Lee takes the pot.

Carlos Mortensen Has Loud Fans

The crowd got a little rowdy during the last all in hand. A few big named Vegas pros are on the rail sweating their buddy Carlos Mortensen. There's no word on who actually has pieces of Mortensen. The room burst with applause when Mortensen flopped the {10-Diamonds} against Paul Morrison. His railbirds cheered wildly when his hand held up and he doubled up against Morrison.
