Lapossie Bluffs the River

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

We got to the table with approximately 25,000 in the pot and a board of {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{4-Clubs}. Matthew Lapossie checked to his opponent, Lynn Samples, who bet 11,000. Lapossie check-raised to 28,000 and Samples wasted no time in making the call.

The turn was the {9-Clubs} and Lapossie led out for 35,000 as Samples looked him over. She made the call.

The river was the {5-Spades} and as Samples glared at him, Lapossie upped the stakes and made it 110,000 to go. Samples continued to study her foe while riffling chips carefully in her right hand. Eventually she decided caution was the better part of valor and let her hand go. Lapossie turned over the bluff — {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts} — for a flopped flush and straight draw that never got there. As he stacked his chips, Samples continued to eye him, obviously not pleased with what had taken place. Despite the small setback she still has a well above average stack with 470,000 while Lapossie moved to 575,000.
