Old McDonald Spiked an Ace

Level 16 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante
Mike McDonald
Mike McDonald

Mike McDonald open-shoved for 436,000 from under the gun, and Paul Newey re-shoved for 759,000 on his direct left. The action folded to Matt Glantz in the big blind, and he asked for a count on Newey's stack.

After he received it, Glantz cut out enough chips to make the call and examined what would be the remainder of his stack if he lost. Silently, he slid them into the middle, and all three hands were tabled.

McDonald: {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}
Newey: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Glantz: {j-Hearts}{j-Spades}

"I really wanted to fold," Glantz bemoaned at the sight of Newey's overpair.

"I think it's a call," Antonio Esfandiari assured him.

The {2-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{5-Hearts} flop changed very little - Glantz held the only heart - but the {a-Diamonds} spiked on the turn to give McDonald the lead. Newey slammed his fist on the table, but he would survive with a small stack if he avoided the case jack on the river.

The {q-Hearts} completed the board, and a wave of chips was pushed McDonald's way. He tripled up to 1,344,000, Newey was crippled to 646,000, and Glantz is still above two million.
