New Chip Leader: Emerson Baroni

Level 5 : 150/300, 50 ante

Usually players don't get too pumped about winning pots on Day 1. But Emerson Baroni can be forgiven for taking down a pot that vaulted him to 99,000 in chips. We only caught the aftermath -- a board of {10-Spades}{a-Spades}{3-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{k-Spades} -- but it seems reasonable to assume that Baroni, with {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}, and his opponent, with {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}, caught it all in on the flop. Each player had already amassed more than 40,000 in chips, well above the current average of about 27,000. After the stacks were counted down, Baroni's opponent was covered and eliminated from the tournament.

"Now I'm stuck in Sao Paulo for four days," he lamented to a friend. "Don't get me wrong, Sao Paulo's a great city -- but I'd rather be in the tournament."
