Brummelhuis Has an Angel on His Shoulder

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Michiel Brummelhuis got up from the table to tell us a somewhat bizarre hand he played against Ari Engel a little while ago.

Engel had opened from the cutoff and Michiel Brummelhuis in the big blind with {A-}{10-} had made the call.

Brummelhuis donk bet into Engel on {5-Diamonds}{6-}{8-Diamonds} with not much of anything, Engel called in position. The {10-Diamonds} hit the turn and with a turned top pair and top kicker, but no diamonds, Brummelhuis bet again. Engel again called.

The river came the {2-Diamonds}, and this is where things got really interesting. Brummelhuis checked, and Engel tossed in a 25,000 chip while announcing "Sixteen".

Brummelhuis was thinking about it, but now Carlos Chadha stepped in and said that "Sixteen" meant 1,600, and not 16,000. A loud discussion emerged, and the brush was called over and ruled it indeed was a 1,600 bet if just the word "Sixteen" had been announced while throwing the 25,000 chip in.

With just 1,600 asked of him, Brummelhuis made the call with his top pair on that scary board. Engel had {Q-}{9-} no diamonds for absolutely nothing, and the pot went to Brummelhuis.
