Alan Wentz Heads Into Day 2 With Chip Lead

The second flight for the 2014 Borgata Spring Poker Open Championship concluded with 142 players joining the 57 from the first flight to return tomorrow at noon for Day 2. The chip leader at the end of the day, and for the tournament thus far, is Alan Wentz who won a massive pot against past World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Open winner Anthony Zinno to surge into the chip lead. Wentz finished the day with an impressive 239,500 in chips which is 32,900 more than what Day 1a chip leader Paul Volpe finished with.
Wentz is a virtual unknown with only one listed live cash for $32,724. That was only a month ago so he could be on to the start of something great with a deep run here.
There were plenty of players taking part in the action today as 299 entrants took part. Joining Wentz at the top of the leader board are Andy Spears (205,400), Kevin Grabel (168,000), Matt Giannetti (165,600), Daniel Buzgon (138,400), Mike Leah (103,800), and Brett Richey (101,800). Buzgon won a big pot off of Tony Dunst to eliminate the WPT commentator and build himself a top stack.
Other notables that will return for Day 2 include Brian Lemke, Andy Frankenberger, Darren Elias, David Tuthill, Corrie Wunstel, Amnon Filippi, Adam Friedman, Matt Affleck, and a short stacked Melanie Weisner who opted to forfeit her Day 1a stack and try again. She would get off to a hot start but would falter at the end of the day to end with just 20,000 in chips.
For all those that made it through, there were as many that would go home disappointed including the likes of Men Nguyen, James Woods, Jamie Kerstetter, Cherish Andrews, and Allen Kessler.
The total prize pool for the tournament just met the $1 million guarantee with it reaching $1,003,950. First place will take home $256,508.
