WPT GTO Trainer Hands of the Week: Playing Against a Tough Big Blind From Middle Position

This week were focused on a typical cash game spot where youre in position against a tough player in the Big Blind after making a standard opening raise from Middle Position.

Both players ranges are somewhat wide here consisting of between 15-20% of total hands. As the preflop raiser your range is uncapped, while the Big Blinds range is capped as they would be 3-betting with most of their big hands in this scenario.

When stacks are deep and ranges are reasonably wide, the in-position player has a very large advantage postflop. With wider ranges postflop hand strengths tend to be weaker which can make it tough for the out of position player to fully realize their equity with many of their holdings against a tough, aggressive player in position.

This dynamic means that as the in-position player you get to do a lot of continuation betting postflop in this scenario. On static boards you will have a significant range advantage and will often use a smaller c-betting size. On more dynamic boards solvers prefer a mixed strategy that tends to favor a larger sizing when you do bet.

Remember that dynamic doesnt always mean coordinated, it simply means that turn and river cards can significantly change equities. This is true of coordinated boards, but it is also true of less coordinated boards containing low cards (particularly when paired) as many over cards can have a significant impact on player equities.
