Former WSOP Main Event Finalist Doug Kim Has a New Web Series
You might remember Douglas Kim from the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event final table. At the time, he was aspiring to be the youngest winner of the competition since Phil Hellmuth.
Unfortunately for Kim, he finished in seventh place, winning $2,391,520. Jamie Gold went on to dominate the final table and earn the biggest Main Event prize ever ($12 million).
Kim has cashed in a few events over the last few years, with his biggest result being a seventh-place finish for $148,848 in the 2011 Borgata Poker Open Championship Event. He had another nice score more recently, collecting $36,708 for 283rd during the 2016 WSOP Main Event.
Although he's remained in the poker scene over the years, we recently learned that Kim's focus has been on other ventures. Kim took to the Two Plus Two forums this week to announce a new project that he has been working on, a mini web series titled "Just Doug." The post read:
"Hey guys,
I don't post here regularly but sometimes lurk in NVG, but some of you may remember me from back in the day in 2006 when I made my WSOP Main Event run and was repping 2p2.
How am I doing after all that time? I decided to use that life changing money and change my life by pursuing a career in entertainment (a 2p2 poster actually posted in my 2006 main event run thread suggestion I pursue an acting career, so here's your vision realized!) rather than continuing on with a consulting career that I was unhappy with.
Unfortunately, my journey hasn't been all that smooth sailing, despite having a decent amount of cash in tow. However, I've made a show about my experiences (which also features my 2006 run in the beginning scenes!)
We were just featured on the Today's Spotlight section of Facebook's new platform for video, Facebook Watch. (no, it's not a wearable like Apple's) You can find us on that section on their main page at www.facebook.com/watch or go directly to my show page at www.facebook.com/justdougseries .
If the show gets picked up, amongst going in depth about the industry as a whole, I do plan on going into the poker subculture and exploring that world (how it was back then and how it was now). I also think it's a damn good show, if I do say so myself.
So please help me make this show a reality by liking, subscribing and sharing!
Who knew that poker Doug's just go onto becoming TV personalities?
Hope you enjoy! Feel free to let me know what you think!
Thanks,
Doug"
In his new series, which he co-wrote, produced and starred in, he showcases a slightly different version of himself.
The main character is "a D-list poker celebrity trying to parlay his success into a career he's woefully underprepared for: Hollywood."
The story of the show sounds really familiar and satirical, and on Doug's personal Facebook page we can find a little bit more about the inspiration for the show:
"2014 was a rough year for me. I had just turned 30, and felt like I had the weight of the world on my shoulders, trying to figure out my career, relationships and if I was going to stick this entertainment thing out for the long haul.
"I remember being really excited for an audition (it was for an Asian male series regular who can sing for a musical tv show) and preparing a bunch for the audition and the song (which may or may not have been from the Book of Mormon). I walked into the audition room and the casting director had me do the read first."
He continues:
"It framed my way of thinking, I needed to do something to either show myself one way or another if I was even pursuing the right craft. I decided to build a project for myself on a large scale, essentially betting on my talent. If what I made fell flat and didn't move my career in any meaningful way, I knew that it was probably a sign I should do something else with my life."
The show has three episodes and has even been featured on Facebook Watch.
