PokerStars Sportsbook to Launch in Denmark in 2016
PokerStars, the world's largest online poker site, plans to launch its online sportsbook services in Denmark during the first months of 2016.
The news came when Amaya Inc., the parent company of the poker room, released a statement to announce that PokerStars has been given a one-year temporary license by Denmark's Spillemyndigheden to offer sports-betting services within the Danish regulated market.
"We're pleased to offer sports betting under a licence that ensures local oversight of the industry and allows PokerStars to bring its gaming expertise and high standards of integrity, compliance and security to Danish bettors," Eric Hollreiser, Vice-President of Corporate Communications at Amaya Inc., explained. "This furthers Amaya's commitment to the responsible growth of online gaming by supporting local regulation that protects players, creates a viable, competitive marketplace and provides revenue for local governments."
What the statement did not specify, however, is whether the service will become available exclusively through the PokerStars 7 client or if Denmark's players will be able to access the sportsbook through one of the domains acquired by Amaya earlier this year.
According to the site GamblingInvest, in the beginning of November, Amaya secured the domain BetStars.com for $10,000 to prepare for the launch of a standalone sports-betting site. Earlier in 2015, the company bought other variations of the same domain name, such as BetStars.eu, BetStars.co.uk, BetStars.de, and BetStars.it.
Denmark's BetStars.dk appears to also be part of Amaya's portfolio, as the domain was registered by the Isle of Man-based Rational Intellectual Holdings Limited on May 20, 2015.
