Around the World at the 2015 WSOP: An Infographic of the Payouts
The 2015 World Series of Poker was certainly an international affair. Over the summer, players from all over the globe stormed Las Vegas to take part in the world's largest poker festival. Each and every one of them had one singular objective on their minds: to win a WSOP gold bracelet.
This year in Sin City, 68 gold bracelets were awarded, $210,379,285 in total prize money was earned, and 103,512 entries were generated. Gold bracelet winners came from 14 different countries, with the USA leading the way at 44 champions. Canada and the UK tied for second at four apiece. All told, 111 countries participated.
With another year of prestigious poker action done and dusted, the latest chapter in the games storied history has been completed. Before we sit back, relax, and look ahead to the excitement that's to come in 2016, let's take a look back at the 2015 WSOP.
World Payouts
The 2015 WSOP awarded an astonishing $210,379,285 in prize money. Across the 68 events held, there were 103,512 total entries and there were 11,638 cashes by players in events. Both the total entries and the total cashes set new records, and the total prize pool awarded proved the largest in the WSOP's history for a non-Big One for One Drop year.
As you can see on the graphic, North and Central America scored the lion's share of prizes, with Europe coming in second. The amount of money won by participants from North and Central America was almost five times that of the money participants from Europe won and over three times that of all other regions combined.
North and Central America
When you look closer at the region that comprises North and Central America, you'll see that the USA was by far and away the leading country, dwarfing the other countries by winning over 92 percent of the payouts awarded. In second behind the USA was Canada.
Europe
Moving across the pond to Europe, you'll see that the UK was the leading money earner, followed by Germany, France, and Italy, in that order. This region supplied the most individual countries of which its players collectively earned over $1 million.
Asia, Australia and Oceania
Jumping over to the Asia, Australia, and Oceania region, Russia topped the charts with over $3.3 million won. Australia was the country in second place with just over $1 million earned. If we were to include Russia in the European region, it would be third behind the UK and Germany, and only about $250,000 ahead of France.
Africa and Middle East
For Africa and the Middle East, players from Israel earned the most money at just under $4.1 million. Nearly half of that was won by one person, 2015 November Nine member Ofer Zvi Stern, who finished fifth in the WSOP Main Event for $1,911,423. No other single country from this region earned more than $30,000.
South America
For South America, Brazilian players earned the most, and that is of no surprise given the rise of poker in the country and amount of competitors from Brazil that make the trek to Las Vegas each summer. Brazil earned nearly three times that of Argentina, which was second in the region.
