UK & Ireland PokerNews Round-Up: A Busy Week For British Grinders
While the majority of the poker communitys eyes are fixated on the 2015 PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Malta festivities and rightly so because it is huge tournament lovers in the United Kingdom are preparing for a busy weekend of action closer to home.
This weekend sees a host of major live events take place, mostly in and around London, which may be of no real surprise. It is not only the live scene that is bursting from the seams because the virtual felt will be full of UK & Ireland players thanks to the MicroMillons Main Event, the FTOPS Main Event, and the start of the partypoker PokerFest all kicking off on March 29.
Exciting times indeed.
The past week began with the great news that Keith Johnson had walked away with more than 144,000 after winning the Italian Poker Tour High Roller event that was running at the aforementioned EPT Malta festival. Johnson is a popular figure in the UK and his win went down well with the community, even if his nearest and dearest did mock him via a parody Twitter account.
It wasnt only Johnson in the winners circle because Genting-sponsored pro David LHonore won the Genting Poker Series Southend Main Event and took home 21,900 after a four-way chop, a chop that probably wouldnt have happened had it not been almost 5:00 a.m. in the morning!
Also winning, but awards not tournaments, were a quintet of English and Irish players at the European Poker Awards. Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree, Oliver Price, Dermot Blain, Jack Salter, and Marc Convey all deservedly collected honours at the ceremony, showing what a force the UK and Ireland is in world poker.
Rounding out the weekly recap are stories such as gambling giant Ladbrokes appointing a new CEO, Charlie Combes and Sam Grafton climbing up the online poker rankings, a new and exciting sports news app and the owners of Neteller agreeing to pay 800 million for payments rival Skrill.
