Harry Law: 2014 GUKPT Leeds champion

The week got off to a flying start over at our UK & Ireland PokerNews site with the 2014 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Leeds Main Event reaching a thrilling conclusion, and the big wins continued throughout the week with no signs of slowing down. Let's see what has been happening overt he past seven days.

Harry Law Wins 2014 GUKPT Leeds Main Event

When Harry Law, a live cash-game pro by trade, decided to make the trip from London up to Leeds last week he had no idea that he would be making the return journey with a big live poker title under his belt.

Law was one of 228 players in the recent GUKPT event, and the man who finished fifth in the European Poker Tour Deauville Main Event at the start of 2014 entered the nine-handed final table of GUKPT Leeds as the shortest stack. He doubled up early on and never looked back.

Find our how Law bulldozed his way to a 32,500 prize in our full recap of the final day's action.

Jon Spinks Final Tables Two PokerStars Sunday Majors

While Law was on his way to a live title, scores of British and Irish players were grinding online across various sites in the Sunday majors. Jon Spinks is one online tournament specialist who has been ranked up there with the best for many years, and he added to his glowing reputation this week when he reached the final tables of not one, but two, PokerStars Sunday majors.

Toby Lewis Reaches Final Table of WPT North Cyprus Main Event

Toby Lewis is one of the best tournament players in the world. With countless online titles to go with his EPT Vilamoura victory, Lewis is one of the game's brightest young stars.

Earlier this week, Lewis navigated his way through the majority of the 404-strong field in the 2014 partypoker World Poker Tour (WPT) North Cyprus Main Event and reached it's six-handed final table. British players have good records in WPT events, with the likes of James Dempsey and Chris Moorman having won WPT Main Events.

Shirley Cole Crowned APAT Queen of Luton

With the GUKPT, Sunday majors, and WPT events all taking place, it is easy to forget that not everyone has to invest large sums of money to become a poker champion. The Amateur Poker Association & Tour (APAT) community is thriving as low-stakes specialists duke it out for seats on the national tour.

The latest leg of the APAT Season 8 took place in Luton and saw 172 players take to the felt in an attempt to become an APAT champion. That honor was bestowed on Shirley Cole, who may have got lucky on more than one occasion, but still ran out a worthy winner.

Less Than One Month Until the UKIPT Returns Home

In less than a month's time, the United Kingdom & Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) heads back to the home of PokerStars for the second year running for the latest incarnation of the UKIPT Isle of Man festival.

This year's Main Event has had it's buy-in cut from 1,100 to 770, and players who bust on Day 1a are permitted one reentry on Day 1b, which should help the ambitious 350,000 guarantee to be met.

Irelands Daragh Davey Continues to Climb

Every week, we take a look at the top 20 ranked online poker tournament players from the UK and Ireland and give them some time in the limelight. For the past two or three months, Daragh Davey has been one of the most consistent poker players from Ireland and has been climbing the ranks.

Davey currently finds himself fifth in Ireland and 371st in the world, two positions that we wouldn't bet against him improving by the time the rankings are next updated.

2014 WCOOP: Brits and Irishmen Making Deep Runs

The 2014 World Championship Of Online Poker (WCOOP) is in full swing and has already seen some gigantic prizes awarded. While we are still waiting for our first British or Irish WCOOP title of the year, our boys and girls have enjoyed some decent success and seem to be putting plenty of deep runs together.

The first six events saw Brits reach three final tables, with the next six events producing similar impressive results, including a $50,000 win for Irish pro Rory Brown.

Find out more about the WCOOP exploits of British and Irish grinders.

That's all for this week's round-up, until next time, good luck at the tables!
