PokerStars became the very first licensed online poker site in Bulgaria on Friday as it officially launched its PokerStars.bg website.

The poker room was already awarded a license to operate in Bulgaria by the State Gambling Commission in February, and since then it has worked to prepare for the launch in a country that, according to the Rational Group's Head of Corporate Communication Eric Hollreiser, is full of promise.

"We believe in the potential of the Bulgarian market and that is why our company has invested in the local license," Hollreiser said when announcing the launch of what is now the only legal poker website available to Bulgarian players.

"Regulation provides peace of mind for players and ensures that local regulators can protect consumers and collect much-needed revenue."

"PokerStars strives to be first-in-market when online poker licenses are made available," Hollreiser continued. "We are proud to be the first locally licensed poker site in Bulgaria.

Because Bulgaria did not choose to close its market like other European countries such as France or Italy, with the launch of PokerStars.bg, Bulgarian players have the chance to legally join the room's international players pool and compete against other players from all over their world.

As PokerStars.bg became available, Bulgaria's online players have also the possibility to take part to all the major online events planned by the poker room as the upcoming World Championship Of Online Poker and to immediately test PokerStars 7, the new desktop poker software that the poker room officially launched on August 7.

The launch of PokerStars.bg should be only the first of a series of important changes in the Bulgarian online poker industry, as during the past months Bet365 and Betfair have gone through the licensing process in order to enter the Bulgarian market with their gaming platforms.
