PokerStars Announces Schedule for 2014 World Championship of Online Poker 0001

The richest online poker tournament series in the world is returning in September.

On Wednesday, PokerStars unveiled the schedule for the 2014 World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP). The annual series will offer a wide variety of games and formats in 66 events from Sept. 7-28 with $40 million in guaranteed prize money.

The festivities begin Sunday, Sept. 7 at 08:00 ET with a $109 no-limit hold'em WCOOP Kickoff event. There will also be a pair of $215 no-limit holdem events on the opening day schedule, including a Sunday Million special tournament with $1.5 million guaranteed.

As always the festival will be highlighted by $5,200 buy-in Main Event with a $10 million guaranteed prize pool. The two-day Main Event will take place Sept. 28-29 and, for the first time ever, the final will be broadcast live. Commentary will be provided by the EPT Live team of James Hartigan and Joe Stapleton, plus members of Team PokerStars.

Also for the first time PokerStars is running a side promotion that will see four protgs win training from Team PokerStars Pros (Andre Akkari, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Eugene Katchalov and Vanessa Selbst), and receive buy-ins to three events, including the $5,200 Main Event. The public vote to see who gets chosen to become the four protgs will begin on August 15 and can be followed at the PokerStars Facebook page.

Last year, PokerStars handed out more than $62 million across 66 events, crushing the $40 million in guarantees being offered. The total number of tournament entrants across the series was 144,945, up nearly 15 percent on the 2012 total of 126,041.

The biggest winner of the 2013 series was Germanys"PlayinWasted" for winning the $5,200 Main Event. The 2013 Main Event was dominated by Germans as each of the top three players hailed from Germany and locked up seven-figure paydays after a three-way deal. With the victory, the "PlayinWasted" added his name to a WCOOP Main Event champions list that includes Thomas Pedersen, Tyson Marks, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Carter King, and Marat "maratik" Sharafutdinov.

Online qualifiers to all the 2014 events are now live, with cash buy-ins starting from less than $1 and Frequent Player Point satellites from just 1 FPP. Here's a look at the 2014 WCOOP schedule (all times EDT):
