Sidhu gained a good portion of his chips when he was able to turn quad fives against one of his opponents during Level 7 of play. According to WPT Live Updates, Sidhu's opponent made a straight on the river and put him all in. Sidhu snapped for his tournament life and was able to double up to about 100,000 in chips. From there, it was smooth sailing as he climbed to the top of the leaderboard.
Also making headlines and finishing among the top 10 was Frenchman Fabrice Soulier. During Level 5, Soulier was able to eliminate Paul Volpe from play. On a KxJx10x flop, Soulier held AxQx for the nut straight and got it in against Volpe's KxKx for top set. Volpe was unable to improve, and Soulier scored the knockout. Shortly thereafter, Soulier flopped another straight and was able use it to kick Florian Gazouez to the curb.
At 150/300/50, Soulier raised to 650 from the hijack and Gazouez made it 1,650 from the small blind. Soulier called and the flop came down K?Q?9?. Gazouez continued for 2,200, and Soulier made it 4,400 to go. Gazouez called, and the 4? fell on fourth street. Gazouez checked, and Soulier continued his aggression with a bet of 6,900. The A? completed the board, and Gazouez checked once again. Soulier fired 17,000, and Gazouez moved all in for about 10,000 more. Soulier called. Gazouez tabled pocket aces for a rivered set, but was ultimately second best to Soulier's J?10? for a flopped straight that turned into Broadway on the river.
Soulier finished the day ninth in chips overall with 110,000.
While these players thrived, others were not as lucky and were ultimately unable to make it through the day. Players like Steve Watts, Alban Juen, Ludovic Lacay, Davidi Kitai, Ana Marquez, and Amanda Musumeci were all unable to bag up at the end of the day.
The three starting fields will combine for Day 2 play which kicks off at 2 p.m. CET on Wednesday. As always, PokerNews will have a recap of the day's happenings posted at the end of play.
