The 2013 World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Open Main Event continued on Monday as 813 players took to the felt on Day 1b, bringing the total number of entrants up to 1,189. That created a prize pool of $3,805,989, of which $825,099 will be awarded to the eventual winner.

After eight levels of play, close to 440 players remained with Paul Volpe and his stack of 231,850 leading the way. Volpe received a $5,000 bonus for finishing the day as the big stack.

Day 1b attracted some fairly big notables in Hollywood actor James Woods and WPT founder Steve Lipscomb, who believe it or not was playing in his very first WPT event. Lipscomb actually offered woods a last-longer side bet at the start of the day, but Woods, who had finished second in a preliminary event, opted to turn him down. It proved an unwise decision in hindsight as Lipscomb fell before the second break (fortunately it was a re-entry so he was able to fire a second bullet).

Many eliminations came after the re-entry period came to a close on Monday. Among those to hit the rail on Day 1b were Kevin Calenzo, Doug Lee, Jessica Dawley, Matt Waxman, Tony Cousineau, Mike Vela, Maurice Hawkins, Mike Sexton and Jeff Gross.

Late in the evening, Keven Stammen managed to double through WPT Season IX Player of the Year Andy Frankenberger. It happened in Level 8 (250/500/50) on a flop of J?3?2?. Frankenberger had bet 3,000 only to have Stammen raise him. Not to be outdone, Frankenberger three-bet enough to cover Stammen, who called off.

Frankenberger: 2?2?

The Day 1b field.

It was a brutal set-over-set situation, but fortunately for Frankenberger he had plenty of chips to absorb the hit. Neither the 7? turn nor 5? river changed a thing and Stammen doubled.

Around the same time, Kevin Saul, who won the 2013 Borgata Poker Open $2,000 NLHE Heads-Up Bounty for $37,248 earlier in the week, received a double of his own. It happened when Saul opened for 1,100 from the hijack and Roland Israelashivili called from the button. The small blind then three-bet to 3,100, Nick Frangos called from the big and Saul four-bet to 9,075. Israelashvili folded, the other two players called and three players took a flop of 8?4?3?.

The small blind wasted little time in leading out for 11,000, Frangos folded and Saul shoved for 23,250. The small blind called with the K?K? but it was no good as Saul tabled the A?A?. The 3? turn and Q? river gave Saul a double, and it was definitely welcomed as he had re-entered the tournament five times!

Others who survived the day were Jared Jaffee (72,000), Vinny Pahuja (72,000), Joey Couden (70,000), Brent Roberts (70,000), David Diaz (69,000), Matt Salsberg (64,075), Amanda Musumeci (63,000), Victor Ramdin (61,000) and Will The Thrill Failla (57,500).

Day 2 will begin at noon EST on Tuesday as less than 600 players from Day 1a and 1b combined into one room. Be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews for daily recaps from the WPT Borgata Poker Open.
