WSOP What To Watch For: Phillips in the Hunt; Mizrachi, Cantu, Lindgren Final Table Event #30
Two Day 2s were completed on Saturday at the 2012 World Series of Poker, which means two events will finish on Sunday or plan to. Those events are Event #29: $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Hold'em Championship and Event #30: $1,500 2-7 Draw Lowball.
Event #29: $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Hold'em Championship
Will Phillips Lock Up WSOP Gold?
Dennis Phillips broke onto the poker scene in the summer of 2008 when he took third in the WSOP Main Event for over $4.5 million. Other than that finish, Phillips has never made a final table at the series, but he's now just 24 players away from doing that. More importantly than a final table, Phillips is onto a Day 3 and looking to make a run at the coveted gold bracelet.
Coming into the final scheduled day of play, Phillips has 576,000 in chips and is sixth place overall. He'll be looking to maneuver his way first to his second WSOP final table, and then work to take it all down.
Clarida Looking to Best 2011 Performance
Rodney Clarida not only final tabled the Seniors Championship in 2007 and placed third for nearly $150,000, he also placed 30th last year. He's now in the final 33 and it's in a field that was a few hundred players more than last year. He'll not only be looking to better what he did last year, but he'll also be looking to best his finish from 2007, and hopefully with a win.
Event #30: $1,500 2-7 Draw Lowball
Mizrachi Trying to Grind Out Another Piece of Gold
With two gold bracelets to his credit, Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi will be looking to earn his third. He puts up solid performances in different events year after year and here's another he's shining in. Mizrachi will enter the final table third in chips and he's been yielding one of the larger stacks in the tournament the entire time. We all know Mizrachi likes to mix things up and this game allows for that, which will make things interesting come final table time.
Can Cantu Win a Third Bracelet?
Coming into the final table of Event #30, Brandon Cantu has the chip lead by a decent margin and will be looking to earn his third WSOP gold bracelet. Cantu previously won gold in 2006 and 2008. He also finished second and third at the series, so he knows all about making it deep. What's going to be interesting to watch is Cantu playing in a tournament where aggression a big part of the game. Everyone knows Cantu is aggressive and this one is going to be fun to watch for sure.
How Will Lindgren's Final Table Appearance Be Received?
There are some players who allegedly claim that Erick Lindgren has had issues with his debts to other players. Lindgren has stayed relatively out of the poker spotlight leading up to the WSOP, but has been playing several events this summer. He's now at the final table of Event #30 and it's going to be interesting to see how the poker community views his appearance here.
