The Sunday Briefing: WCOOP High Roller Event Filled with Familiar Faces
A busy Sunday on the major online poker sites included the conclusion of two more events in the 2009 World Championship of Online Poker. One of the WCOOP offerings was the first "high roller" event of the year a $10,300 event that produced a final table loaded with big names. Among them were Kevin BeL0WaB0Ve Saul, Mike Sowerss Sowers, Scott SCTrojans Freeman, and Peter Belabacsi Traply.
Sumpas held the lead three-handed and took out Kevin BeL0WaB0Ve Saul to enter heads-up play as a dominating chip leader. With the blinds and antes at 5,000/10,000/1,250, Sumpas made it 21,400 to go "on the button." In the small blind, Kevin Saul popped it to 56,530 and Sumpas tagged along, leading to a Q? A? 3? flop. Saul check-called a bet of 46,500 and when the 3? hit fourth street, he check-called Sumpas 125,000 chip bet. The 10? landed on fifth street and Saul opted to check again but was faced with a decision for his remaining 453,400 when Sumpas went all in. After a few moments Saul called with A?8?, however, it had been beaten on the river as Sumpas tabled K?J? for the Broadway straight. Sumpas took a 5:1 chip lead into heads-up play and bested Mike Sowerss Sowers to emerge with the title and $611,455.
Event 9 also had a prize pool that exceeded $2 million, garnering over 11,000 players all vying for a piece of the pie. Eventual winner "ternoplayer" was at a significant chip disadvantage when heads-up play began against "maxisou" battled back to valiantly to grab the lead. On the final hand, both players saw a flop of 5?J?Q?, and all the money went into the middle. "Maxisou" was trailing with J?8?, and "ternoplayer" looking good for the win with K?Q?. The 8? fell on the turn, and now it looked as if "maxisou" would double up, but the tables turned once again on the river, when the K? landed awarding the pot, the first prize cash, and the WCOOP bracelet to "ternoplayer".
