Sunday Online Recap: 'dorinvandy' Tops Star-laden Final in WCOOP Event #5 0001

A busy Sunday on the major online sites included two more events in the 2008 World Championship of Online Poker at PokerStars and the weekly $750,000 at Full Tilt. One of the WCOOP offerings was the first "high roller" event of that series, a $10,000+300 event that produced a final table loaded with big names. Scott "dorinvandy" Dorin came into the final with the lead and emerged with the title. Event #6 of the WCOOP was still in progress as this recap was assembled and will be included in tomorrow's report.

2008 WCOOP Event #5, $10,300 NLHE

WCOOP Event #5 was not for the light-walleted. The $10,000+300 entry meant an exclusive and pro-heavy field, though the $2 million guarantee was easily shattered as 321 signed up to create a prize pool of $3,210,000. Several other big names came close to the final nine, among them Joseph "bigegypt" Elpayaa in 22nd place ($20,865) and Daniel "steamraise" Alaei in 13th place ($35,310). The final table boasted an impressive bunch and the first-place prize of $617,925 would have to be earned. The chip counts at the beginning were as follows:

Jonathan Little may have started as the shortest stack, but quickly worked his way up to being second in chips. After winning a few smaller pots and building his stack to over 700,000, a huge hand occurred with baseball star turned PokerStars Ambassador Orel Hershiser. With the blinds and antes at 7,500/15,000/1,500, Orel raised to 45,000 from middle position and Little called from the cutoff. The flop came 8?6?K? and Hershiser led out for 60,000, which Little called. The turn brought the 2? and this time Hershiser checked to Little, who fired out 138,000. Hershiser called and the river paired the board, coming out the 8?. Hershiser checked again and Little moved all in having Orel slightly covered. It did not take long for Hershiser to call and see that his A?A? was outflopped by Little's 6?6?. The remaining players all wished Orel a game well played, and Hershiser struck out to the tune of $54,570 for the ninth-place finish. The next elimination came with the blinds at 10,000/20,000 with a 2,000 ante. Scott "dorinvandy" Dorin opened to 50,000 under the gun. From middle position, purplEUROS moved all in for 514,187 with A?Q?, but was not happy to see a snap-call from Dorin, who showed A?K?. The board ran out 3?7?4?J?6? and purplEUROS took home the eighth-place prize of $75,435.

The top two chip counts prior to the next elimination were Dorin and Jonathan Little. A monster hand would occur between the two that caused a great deal of discussion at the table. Dorin opened to 50,000 under the gun and Little called from the big blind, bringing out a flop of 4?2?5?. Little led out with a bet of 72,000 and Dorin raised it up, making it 240,000 to play. Little called and the Q? hit the turn. This time Little check-called a 420,000 bet from Dorin. The river card was the 10? and again Little checked. There was 1,464,000 in the pot at this point and Dorin moved all in for over 2.5 million. Little went into the tank as he decided the fate of his remaining 1.2 million chip stack. After a few minutes, Little made the call with A?5? but was beaten by Dorin's 5?4?. The seventh-place finish earned Jonathan "Jcardshark" Little $107,535. The remaining players expressed continuing confusion at Little's call, though action went on. The blinds were now at 12,500/25,000 with a 2,500 ante. Chris Moneymaker had the shortest stack and moved all in from middle position with A?4?. Unfortunately for him, Glen Chorny woke up with K?K? in the small blind and isolated the action. The board ran out 7?10?J?8?8? and the 2003 WSOP Main Event champ was out in sixth place for $139,635. With five players remaining, the chip counts were:

A coin flip would soon happen between the two short stacks that led to Greg "DuckU" Hobson doubling to over 550,000 and leaving Nick "gbmantis" Niergarth dangerously low in chips. A few hands later Niergarth moved all in from the small blind with Q?2? and was called by Peter "#1PEN" Neff from the big blind with A?Q?. No deuce would fall, eliminating Nick "gbmantis" Niergarth in fifth place for $179,760. The next to go was EPT Monte Carlo Champion Glen "Choron" Chorny. After taking a few hits, Chorny was down to just over 500,000 in chips. With blinds and antes at the 20,000/40,000/4,000 level, Scott Dorin moved all in from the small blind and Chorny called all in from the big blind. Dorin's A?Q? dominated Chorny's A?7?. The flop was nearly perfect for Dorin coming out 10?K?J? to give him Broadway. The turn and river brought no chop for Chorny as he finished in fourth place, taking home $256,800.

The third-place finisher was the man who is undoubtedly having the best WCOOP thus far, Peter "#1PEN" Neff. He finished second in Event #3 and made this final table less than 24 hours later. He got his last 306,686 chips in the middle with 4?4? and was racing against Dorin's Q?7?. The board ran out 6?3?7?A?2? and Peter "#1PEN" Neff earned $337,050 for his effort.

The heads-up battle for the bracelet and $617,925 first-place prize began with Scott "dorinvandy" Dorin holding 5,521,457 in chips to Greg "DuckU" Hobson's 2,503,543. On the 29th hand of the heads-up match, Dorin took it down. The blinds and antes were now 25,000/50,000/5,000. Dorin raised to 125,000 and Hobson called, leading to a 10?8?7? flop. Hobson checked, Dorin fired 140,000, and Hobson reraised all in for 2,065,086. Dorin called instantly and revealed 10?10? for top set. Hobson showed Q?9? for flush and straight draws. The turn was the K? and Scott Dorin just needed to hold on for one more card to win the event�� the Q? river made Hobson a pair but was otherwise meaningless. Hobson finished as runner-up and won $459,030 for an excellent showing.

Scott "dorinvandy" Dorin won Event #5 of the 2008 WCOOP and $617,925. Having come in second in FTOPS Event #1 last month, Dorin continues his run of top finishes in major online events. The final results:

The Full Tilt $750,000 Guarantee drew a field of 3,838 hopefuls and generated a total prize pool of $767,600. The chip counts to start the final table were as follows:

At the 40,000/80,000/10,000 level, a flurry of eliminations occurred. First, after taking a few early hits, RAMALHO moved all in for 465,250 and Antoshka reraised all in, successfully isolating the action. It was pocket threes for RAMALHO against Antoshka's pocket queens. A third queen on the flop would win the hand for Antoshka, eliminating RAMALHO in ninth place for $10,285.84. The very next hand, pretzychulo was all in with A?J?, but ran into UFman2's A?K?. Two kings hit the board and pretzychulo finished in eighth place for $13,816.80. A few hands later, Eric "blizair" Blair's A?Q? had HaCeKoMoE666's K?Q? all in and needing help. The board ran out Q?6?10?7?J? and HaCeKoMoE666 took home $17,654.80 for seventh place.

After the blinds went up to 50,000/100,000 with a 10,000 ante, UFman2 eliminated smitty2217 in sixth place. From the small blind, UFman2 moved all in with K?10? and smitty2217 called all-in with K?J?. The dominating preflop situation did not make it through the five community cards as the board rolled out 10?A?6?5?8?, earning smitty2217 $23,565.32. UFman2's hot streak continued when later in the level, he moved all in again from the small blind with K?5? and was called by UtahTom, who showed A?4?. The board came out 9?K?3?Q?2? and UtahTom finished in fifth place for $31,778.64. UFman2 was certainly running well and it did not appear like the end was in sight. With the blinds at 60,000/120,000 and an ante of 15,000, Eric "blizair" Blair was able to get all in with A?Q? having UFman2's A?3? crushed. However, the board ran out 8?4?5?2?7? and UFman2 made a wheel to eliminate Blair in fourth place for $42,371.52.

UFman2 then eliminated yan09 in third place when UFman2's A?Q? held while all in preflop against yan09's 10?9? when the board ran out 4?7?J?J?4?, earning yan09 $53,732 for third place.

The heads-up battle began with these chip counts:

Antoshka - 2,634,360

The tournament ended at the 80,000/160,000/20,000 level when Antoshka got it all in with A?J? against UFman2's 10?4?. Sadly for Antoshka, the flop came out 10?10?J? and UFman2 was well ahead. The turn and river were the 2? and 4? meaning Antoshka finished runner-up and earned $82,133.20.
